With this week being the week of the Miss Mississippi Pageant, it made me think of two Buddies (David Corn and Tommy Wolf) that are in that better place . Shelby Corn is in the running again and I couldn't help but reflect on the short time I had with her Dad, David Corn.
Years ago, David and I had the privilege of being the road managers of our son's select soccer team. MS United decided to field four teams, two in Madison and two in Rankin County. There were not enough players in the mix for two full teams in Rankin County, so we had to go and "hunt up some more" kids and parents willing to go into these uncharted waters with us.
The other Rankin team was the typical "A team" senerio, and we were the "Bad News Bears". I set out on the task of raising money to do things for the kids like giving them all the same soccer ball, stuff like that. At dinner one night, David and I hatched a plan. We went to a mutual friend, Tommy Wolf. We all had one thing in common, a love for picking at a friend, ole "TA". Tommy was in the copier business and was always giving away his advertising stuff. We asked Tommy for two of his company T-Shirts that we could wear to our first out of State soccer tournament. It would give him some exposure and give us a jab at Ole "TA". because she didn't think of it first. Tommy loved the idea so much that he wrote us a personal check to be part of the fun. First tournament was in Memphis, both teams went, and it turned out to be the hottest day of the summer. Tommy had given each of us one of his t-shirts, only problem was, they were XL and black. Seeing these two big ole boys in those undersized black t-shirts in that heat was absolutely comical! Ole "TA" spotted us, and immediately knew we were up to no good. Those t-shirts were our punishment for this awful sin, but boy, was it worth it!
So, this Bud is for you David and Tommy. I know there is a supply of red cups up there in heaven with you!
